Post Grad Space Parts Management Intern

May - August 2019 • El Segundo, CA

What I liked

I loved learning so much about space electronics. I realized that even with my degree there's so much I don't know yet! My manager was very good and supported me in networking and learning as much as I could, even in other departments. And because it's a big company there's so many perks and resources to take advantage of on campus. The flex time schedule was also super convenient with my commute. As long as I put in 8 hours a day, I could come in as early/late as I wanted, within reason.

What I wish was different

Some other interns didn't have managers as awesome as mine and they felt like their time at the company wasn't worth much, or that they weren't contributing in any meaningful way. My own work was mostly organizing data with excel sheets, drafting documents in word, and a LOT of reading. Little to no engineering design work. I wished that I didn't have to deal with the LA traffic to go 30 miles into work every day and night (~1 hour in the morning and ~1.5 hours at night), but it was worth it.

Advice

Get Involved! Take Advantage of all the Resources! Get to know a lot of people and ask them all the questions! I didn't get this internship through BYU, it was actually through my grad program at CSU Fullerton. The electrical engineering department was invited to a career fair at Raytheon's campus, and while there I was given a verbal offer on the spot. I think they're looking to hire locals because there's a much higher chance of them sticking around after the internship to work full-time.

finance intern

What I liked

I liked the culture and the memories I made. Going to different sites and meeting a variety of people along with various types of projects.

What I wish was different

I wish I had done a better job of doing other tasks than what I was working on. For example, I was working on program controls, but wish I had done more FP&A.

Advice

One advice I will say is to have an open mind. Be open to try a variety of opportunities and never back down from a challenge.

Pricing Lead

May - August 2018 • Sterling, VA

What I liked

I enjoyed the amount of trust that my supervisor had in me. I was a Finance intern that acted as a Pricing Lead since my team was understaffed. I had to contact multiple estimators and work with the Program Managers to complete the submission deliverables before the contract due date. I also enjoyed meeting with multiple Finance leadership for career discussions during my 15 week internship.

What I wish was different

I wish I received a little more training early on in the process. On my third day, I was given my first proposal to price. It was somewhat stressful trying to learn as I went. More formal training for pricing personnel began towards the end of my internship, but wish it was available earlier.

Advice

Don't expect your full-time position to be a straight 9-5 job. There were a handful of times where I had to stay in the office until 8:30 pm. Although this may be frustrating, you make meaningful connections with your counterparts which can propel your career down the road.

Software Engineer Intern

May - August 2019 • Melbourne, FL

What I liked

What I wish was different

I would have liked some more software writing work, but, on the other hand, I got some good experience setting up some tools for detecting code duplication and code coverage.

What I wish was different

A lot of the work that I was given was tedious tasks that didn't take any engineering skills to accomplish. I would have enjoyed more difficult work.

Advice

Program Managment Intern

June 2019 • Burlington, MA

What I liked

I really enjoyed the culture at Raytheon. Everyone I had the opportunity to work with was extremely helpful and welcoming. This work environment stimulates growth and rewards those who have the passion to learn. And working for one of the largest defense contractors in the country, I was reminded every day of how the contributions I made directly affected the men and women on the frontlines. Having that opportunity to give back to those who serve and protect us every day was amazing.

What I wish was different

Advice

Some advice that I can give to anyone looking to work in this industry is to remember who the customer is. The government and military are there to serve and protect and to do so they need the best and most efficient technology solutions available. Raytheon provides this by reminding their employees everyday why the work they do is important. And one more thing, always carry a notebook!
