Digital Technology Leadership Program Intern

June - August 2020 • Farmington, CT

What I liked

As an intern, I was sent to the head of the PMO within the Infrastructure Services Department. So, they wanted us to have direct collaboration with the leaders of the various departments. I was treated like a real employee instead of an intern. I was put on real projects that had meaningful effect on the way the PMO was run and I also learned so much about software and hardware project lifecycles within a major corporation.

What I wish was different

I obviously wish it was in person because it was remote due to covid. I was still able to make strong connections through zoom meetings but it takes more of an effort to set up meetings and go out of your way to make connections when it is virtual.

Advice

Always be open to learning! Be open to different departments and different roles especially during internship experiences because you never really know what you want to do! Although I don't necessarily want to work in project management in the future, it was such a great learning experience to see the project lifecycle from a birds eye view and now I will be a better software engineer because of it.

Supply Chain Intern

June - August 2020 • Dallas, TX

What I liked

It was very impressive and appreciated that Raytheon kept and adapted the intern program during the pandemic. Even going online, Raytheon still gave me REAL work that a full time associate would be responsible for. As a supply chain intern on a project management team, I was able to practice direct communication with suppliers and other internal stakeholders. My fellow interns also expressed that they were being engaged in critical, engaging projects that were impacting the business. This was a very unique and valuable experience as most internships give you busy work or you’re bored half the time. Everyone I worked with was insightful and wanted to not only get to know you, but help you get to know the company overall because it is a very large organization.

What I wish was different

Financials for housing relocation we’re very generous, but it would have been helpful to have a guide for short term rentals.

Advice

In the online environment, make the most of opportunities to network by reaching out to young professionals in positions that may interest you. Not only will you get to hear about the day to day of a future full time position, but you’ll be on their radar if they hear of any openings.

What I liked

The structure of their program is conducive to learning and growth. Very friendly teams. Patient with new hires.

Systems Engineering Intern

May - July 2019 • Marlborough, MA

What I liked

I loved the work atmosphere and schedule. Everyone I worked with was very accommodating, helpful and supportive throughout my time there. I felt valued, and the work I did was interesting and taught me a lot. The company also had special tours and events for interns that were nice to participate in.

What I wish was different

Communication before the internship was infrequent and a little vague, making sorting out some details a little difficult. No housing is provided and I wasn't very happy with the rooming situation I found but the rest of the experience was good.

Advice

There was a lot I had to figure out and learn on my own throughout the internship so be prepared to put in extra time when needed to figure out things and don't be afraid to ask for help.

GFS Payroll Intern

June - August 2019 • Farmington, CT

What I liked

I was really shocked with the amount of diversity that was in my department as well as the amount of women in executive roles. The benefits that are offered to employees such as multiple lunch cafeterias, on site gym, and even a company hotel were outstanding.

What I wish was different

I wish that I would've been given a summer project or more hands on work to do. I received minimal work if any at all, and I never had a task to do.

Advice

Please take advantage of the numerous connections that this company offers! I networked with many of my coworkers which ranged from high level executives, contractors, and other interns as well. I ended my internship not just with a return offer but with a family as well.

Systems Engineer

May - December 2019 • Aurora, CO

What I liked

Large company working on complex systems. My program specifically was working with developing the architecture for creating a universal ground station capable of flying a large variety of satellites.

What I wish was different

Being an un-classified intern on a classified program makes gaining valuable experience tough as you're not able to get the full picture. Also, me and my fellow interns were located away from the majority of the team. As such, we didn't experience as much of the day to day collaboration we could have had we been located with them. No one really showed us the ropes or made sure we had work to do, you had to be quite aggressive with outreach in order to get any attention.

Advice

Electrical Engineering co-op

January - August 2019 • Tewksbury, MA

What I liked

• Having the opportunity to work with senior engineers and learn from their experience. • Having a Friday off every other week by doing 9/80 schedule.

What I wish was different

N/A

Advice

I would say that doing a co-op job during the school years is a great opportunity for all students to learn more and faster about their filed. In addition, co-op job gives a new way to learn things that not easy to learn in school such as working in a team of more than ten people from different departments. Moreover, by working hard and showing the company the ability of learning new things, students might have a big chance of working with that company in the future, which is one of the huge benefits of doing a co-op job.
