Safety Intern

What I liked

I loved getting to apply my classroom knowledge in the field! I also liked getting to connect with people who were in my shoes not too long ago, and meeting and working with the other interns was fun.

What I wish was different

I do wish I had been able to stay for longer. I also worked about 50 hours a week and had an hour commute between my apartment and the site.

Advice

Definitely make sure you're willing to work overtime on a weekly basis, but be prepared to have fun with the people you're working with too.

Electrical Engineering Intern

June - August 2022 • Lenexa, KS

What I liked

I liked the work environment established at the company, events created for interns and new hires, and the project that I worked on.

What I wish was different

I wish interns could've gone on a couple of site visits instead of just one.

Advice

Create connections with people who work in the company and stay in contact with them when you go back to school.

Field/ Office Engineer

May - August 2021 • Phoenix, AZ

What I liked

My internship was a great experience from the craft to the managers, everyone was great. The amount of learning I did during my internship was tremendous but I wouldn't change it for the world. I was able to take the role of a field engineer and learn the way things work for the South Central Light Rail Extension Project.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had not been changed from supervisor since I connected really well with him initially however, it also teaches you to adapt to change and to people quickly. As well as knowing, that its really up to you how you will create your own experience and your attitude towards certain things.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share is I'd get to know everyone you work with and don't be scared to learn new things or even ask questions. You'll be amazed on how many people are always willing to help you succeed.

Intern

June 2021 • Phoenix, AZ

What I liked

The people were so welcoming and more than willing to teach me. Kiewit was very generous with relocation and all around a great company to work for!

What I wish was different

I wish my first summer (2020) could’ve been in person but the pandemic began around that time. Fortunately, Kiewit allowed all of us interns to work virtually and made the best of the situation.

Advice

Ask questions! That’s the best way to learn and show you want to be there. Also, don’t be afraid to ask for new opportunities. I’ve had a lot of luck on simply asking and receiving. Communication and effort is huge!

Software Engineer Intern

May - December 2020 • Omaha, NE

What I liked

The best part of my time at Kiewit was the working environment. There are so many people there to help you and want you to succeed. They provide helpful feedback on your performance and provide great mentorship. Of course, it's not all work. The Kiewit Technology Group (KTG) provided lots of opportunities to get to know your fellow interns and have some fun. There are also lots of networking opportunities to help launch you to your next internship.

BI Data Integration Intern

May 2021 • Omaha, NE

What I liked

I liked that Kiewit provided events for interns to interact and get to know each other. I also liked that I was provided a learning environment in which I wasn't pressured to perform, but encouraged to succeed.

What I wish was different

Interns were to remain in office during the summer. This was a time in which full time employees were working from home part time. I would have liked it if I was able to work from home when the rest of my team was working from home.

Advice

My advice for other interns would be to ask as many questions as possible. As an intern, you aren't expected to have all the answers, if any at all so it is the perfect time to learn. I would also encourage interns to meet as many people as possible. Many employees want to get to know the interns and all it takes is the courage to introduce yourself. Connections that you make while you are an intern can be extremely valuable in the future.

Field Engineer

May - August 2020 • Dallas, TX

What I liked

It was a vey hands on experience. I worked in the concrete paving discipline and got to do everything from work in the office tracking quantities and planning work to actually making and laying the concrete roadway and operating heavy equipment. About half my internship was spent working at night which was nice to no have to be in the hot sun.

What I wish was different

Really nothing I had a great time and learned a ton.

Advice

Work as many hours as you can and ask as many questions as you can. Every one has something to teach and there are no stupid questions.

Field/Office Engineer Intern

June - August 2021 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I enjoyed seeing all my coworkers every morning. I would have never guessed that the team on the jobsite would treat me like an actual field engineer instead of an intern. I liked how I was given responsibilities within the first few days and how it my responsibilities grew from as the internship went on.

What I wish was different

I wish my project was not the in the preliminary steps of the job. The team was still working on the work plans for the important aspects of the job. It wasn’t until the last few weeks of the job, did we begin to pour and finish some of the hurricane barrier walls.

Advice

Never be afraid to ask questions. Act as a sponge and soak up all the information you can because it will help you in your future career.

Mechanical Engineering Intern

June - August 2021 • Lenexa, KS

What I liked

Kiewit did a great job of letting the interns do work that their entry level engineers were doing and partnered me with a mentor so I could have a go to person for questions. Overall, Kiewit gives its interns an excellent internship experience.

Field Engineer Intern

May - August 2021 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

Kiewit is full of highly motivated individuals that make working in construction very fun, there is lots to learn and plenty to see when on a Kiewit job.

What I wish was different

I wish that I could have started this job when I got out of school in early May but it didn’t start until the end of May.

Advice

This experience is not meant for your typical number crunching engineer. You will be put into robust situations where it is up to you and your confidence and mental strength to make it out as a success.

Civil Engineering Intern

June - July 2020 • Atlanta, GA

What I liked

Even though I was at home working through the computer this summer, I still learned a lot about construction from project tour videos and I learned a bit of estimating and scheduling with Primavera and Excel. I got a good sense of Kiewit's culture and organization through training videos and Q&A sessions.

What I wish was different

This summer my internship was virtual, so of course, I wish it could have been in-person. There were few opportunities for supervisor-intern interaction because my supervisor did not communicate very well with his virtual interns.

Advice

I got an internship with Kiewit as a freshman. I know that there may be a stereotype that Kiewit only hires older students with more experience, but I would recommend you still interview and try out for these positions as a younger student. It is possible to work at Kiewit as an underclassman. Another piece of advice is to keep up your relationships with Kiewit employees after your summer ends. Make LinkedIn contacts, attend Kiewit networking events, and more to stay close to the company after your internship ends.

Structural Design Intern

June - August 2020 • Lenexa, KS

What I liked

I love the culture at Kiewit. They are big on everyone embracing the core values and place a large focus on team building. I really felt like I was a part of a family. I also appreciate the technical knowledge that I have gained through my internships. I get to experience a little from every area. I enjoyed learning how to navigate the BIM model. I also enjoyed solving a problem through process improvement.

What I wish was different

This past summer looked different than my first summer with Kiewit. Due to COVID-19 we all worked remotely from home. I wish we could've been in the office interacting with the other interns. That was my favorite part of my first summer experience was meeting new people. However, Kiewit did a great job with keeping everyone engaged and involved.

Advice

Accept all of the help and advice that you can. Introduce yourself to everyone and network. Be humble and learn something from every experience.
