Mechanical Engineering Intern
May 2021 • Akron, OH
What I liked
While working for Goodyear over the summer I really liked how inviting the atmosphere was. This was my first Co-op rotation and I was very excited to get an experience I could. I am very glad it was with Goodyear. I worked with facilities based in the Akron campus. I liked the process of how these facilities work. Goodyear is not all about tire manufacturing which is what I first thought.
What I wish was different
One thing I wish would have been different is my involvement. Since this was my first engineering co-op I had limited knowledge of any real world scenarios. I used this co-op as an opportunity to learn and get experience with this.
Advice
Make sure to look at all of the opportunities a co-op has to offer. I knew Goodyear was a very reputable company so I looked in to the different departments they had and found facilities engineering.

Laid the ground work for my knowledge of the company, which will help me in my future terms (Spring and Fall 2020 and Summer of 2021). Given the nature of my projects my technical writing has greatly improved
What I wish was different

Advice
I was a freshman when I applied for the job, and thought I wasn’t going to get it. A few weeks later they called me back, and I’m very great full for that. Just because you’re “young” don’t sell yourself short.

What I liked
Great opportunity to jump into an Engineering role and take on responsibilities at an approachable rate. Great mentor program in helping new engineers.
What I wish was different
Wish I could have visited the plant that and see what I was working on in action. Also wish the HR interaction was better in regards to fair compensation.
Advice
Know when you need to fight for yourself. It is a very large company and easy to get lost in the shuffle. Make sure you make you wishes very clear.

Human Resources Intern
May - August 2019 • Akron, OH
What I liked
It was a rotational program. Since HR is so broad, it was awesome to get exposure in different parts including talent acquisition, talent management, compensation and benefits, labor relations, etc.
They paid a housing stipend, flights from my university to their HQ and back, while also paying a competitive salary for the area and assignment.
I also like that they only hire interns to eventually fill full-time positions. There is no competing for return offers, they are essentially implied as long as you perform well.
What I wish was different
The relocation guide did not provide enough support for relocating interns. The area I lived in was not very safe, and I wish I'd been advised to live outside the main city they are based in.
I was in a different building than the other HR interns when I first got there, and felt alienated. I was in a business partner role supporting clients in the building, whereas the rest were in the corporate HQ. It would have been great for a returning person to go there at first, or to have an intern there on the second rotation.
Advice
Goodyear interviews their interns based on their 5 core competencies. These include be agile, energize the team, act with integrity, promote collaboration, and deliver results. So be thinking about ways you can create par stories around these experiences!

Staff Engineering co-op
May - August 2018 • Topeka, KS
What I liked
I really enjoyed the pace at which we had to work. Everything was meant to meet our output demand, which put a lot of pressure on me as a co-op to make sure things ran smoothly. I loved this because I find that I work best under pressure.
What I wish was different
I was pretty exhausted by the heat out there. Obviously there is nothing that can be done about that, but the work conditions were pretty harsh at times and it was difficult to get work done, because it was actually unsafe at times to have workers in certain areas.
Advice
Don't be afraid to take risks. I had never lived outside of Ohio prior to this experience, but the people, experiences, and cultures that were introduced to me were invaluable and will leave an impact on me for the rest of my life.

Mechanical Engineering Intern
May - August 2018 • Akron, OH
What I liked
I enjoyed my project because what I did was real work for the company. I did research for Goodyear's Global Standards. I also enjoyed all the opportunities I had outside of my department. The University Relations team coordinated many networking opportunities for the interns to meet new people and also learn more about the company.
What I wish was different
I wish I would have been able to work more and learn more about the other departments. I learned the basics of each department but I wish I had the chance to learn more specifically about the departments that I was interested in.
Advice
One piece of advice would be to not be afraid to set up meetings with people! Whether it be with other interns to learn about their experiences or upper level management; they are more than willing to talk to you about their personal experiences.
