Follett Higher Education

Associate

April 2019 • Jacksonville, FL

What I liked

The management is extremely friendly and flexible. The other associates are very welcoming and it doesn't feel like work until I'm there. I've got to know the students who are in and out of the bookstore a lot and they make it a great place to work.

What I wish was different

Advice

As any customer service job, the best advice I can give is to not take customer reactions/actions/attitudes personally and to always remain respectful.

What I liked

I really liked how well I worked with my team; I loved interacting with customers and telling them about my college experience while running the register. There was always little jobs to do, from dusting to folding and reorganizing stock. With the nice music playing, and always something to do, the time passed by quickly. At Chapman University our hours manager is so helpful and works with student schedules.

What I wish was different

I really like the system that the Giftshop upgraded to for the checkout but the bookshop is different; it is easy to learn after a time though, and everyone is super helpful.

Advice

Have fun with the job! Also if you are have allergies or hay fever, maybe ask another team member to do the dusting if you are someone who minds about that.

Associate

June - August 2018 • Oakland, CA

What I liked

My coworkers were very friendly and helped me to learn my duties very quickly once I started.

What I wish was different

I wish that the hours had been structured slightly differently to better approximate employee need based on the number of customers that entered the bookstore during certain dates and times.

Advice

Working with textbook sales can be emotionally tiring because customers are often upset at book prices/availability. Stay polite and show as much empathy as possible.

What I liked

I love being able to serve people in little ways. Whether it was helping students find their textbooks, bringing them up at the register, or just reading them at the door, retail can be a great act of service if you choose it to be.

Temporary Retail Associate

May - August 2018 • Lawrenceville, GA

What I liked

I loved my work environment. Everyone was very friendly and warm. I also learned many skills like customer service and communication.

What I wish was different

I wish I had found out about this job opportunity sooner. I would have loved working here early on in my academic career.

Advice

My advice about my experience would be to always look around for any opportunity, even if it is a temporary job. I would also like to say that if you are unsure if you will get the job or not, you should still apply, because they may call you for an interview and they may even hire you. This is a learning process, rejection and acceptance.

Temporary Team Member

July 2018 • Hayward, CA

What I liked

I enjoyed the experience. I enjoyed being able to learn more about what goes into a school bookstore, what goes into rush week, and what goes into helping all the new students on campus. It's a lot of work, but it's very rewarding to be able to help everyone who's a little lost.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been able to start earlier, as it really helped me learn the campus, and learn everything I would need to he a successful student.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share is: never be afraid to ask for help or a little guidance. That's what we're here for, and if one of us doesn't know the answer, another person most likely does, and we will find it out for you.

What I liked

I liked that it was a relaxed environment, and that it offered me a different aspect on the work field rather than what my major is.

What I wish was different

Advice

I would like to let people know that getting a job in retail or the food industry if your major is health sciences or accounting can be a good thing. You can work on skills like communicating with difficult people and task division.
