Research Assistant Intern

June - August 2018 • Racine, WI

What I liked

I liked that I was able to return to my hometown area and work within my community. I was able to be outside everyday collecting water samples for regulatory recreational water E. coli sampling and I was able to see how health is directly effected by the environment in which we live.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have been given more projects throughout the summer. At some points I would be assigned very interesting projects, but other times I would be doing simple lab work, like performing quality control checks on different machines or washing glassware. All projects, whether complex or simple are important, but sometimes its frustrating doing things that could be considered "busy work".

Advice

I would definitely look into different kinds of internship opportunities and reach out to your program/major faculty. I found my internship with the help of my professors. They are a great resource and truly want to help you succeed. It is also important to start looking for summer internships early. Many internships have application deadlines in late winter or early spring, so you need time to get all your resources together (transcripts, personal statements, letters of rec.).
