Alliant Energy, Inc.

Business Strategy

May 2022 • Madison, WI

What I liked

I loved how supportive my team was and how open everyone was to talk about their role and how they started working for alliant. If I was confused about terminology someone was always willing to explain it to me or point me in the right direction.

What I wish was different

I wish we had more events or training with other interns. Working hybrid meant that sometimes all you would see is your team.

Advice

Make sure you take initiative and reach out to other departments early on in your internship.

Communications and Marketing Intern

June - August 2019 • Cedar Rapids, IA

What I liked

Workplace is "dress for your day." Mostly smart casual dress. They're very flexible with your schedule and the work you'd like to do. They are receptive to honest feedback and encourage intern participation and collaboration on projects and in meetings. Overall, great learning experience!

What I wish was different

My manager was very busy and it was difficult to get clarity on projects. But my team was very supportive and I never felt like I wasn't learning because of how willing to help they all were.

Advice

The company values safety, so be prepared for an interview question about safety and your relationship with it! Also, ask questions in the interview and during the internship as well - no question is a silly question! They care about helping you learn and want to help every step of the way.

IT-Audit Intern

May - August 2019 • Madison, WI

What I liked

Well funded internship program within the organization. Large collaboration between the other (about) 50 interns for the summer. Tours of the plant facilities of every power type added variety to your summer work.

What I wish was different

-I wish my mentors gave me more applicable skills and experiences during work. -More motivated individuals within my department that were able to explain Audit process.

Advice

As an IT Management major, I was unfamiliar with the process and day-to-day tasks of an IT Audit individual. I’m glad I received this experience and opportunity, but this is NOT the industry I want to work in.

Delivery System Planning Intern, East

May - August 2018 • Madison, WI

What I liked

I loved the internship program they offer. It's well organized across the entire company and offers a lot of professional experience on and off work. I was a Delivery System Planning intern and worked closely with my assigned mentor, a planning engineer and got to work on my own planning study. As an engineering intern, I also got to attend some training with other engineering teams, visited work sites, and attended company organized social events. In paying back to the community as Alliant Energy does, I was able to volunteer at the Madison zoo through the Alliant Energy Foundation and it was a great experience to not only impact the community with my engineering specialty but also my ability to help out on other things. I love the working environment, staffs, the leadership, and the life/work relationship that is encouraged in the company.

What I wish was different

I wish the summer was longer!

Advice

If you find yourself in an organization like Alliant Energy, take advantage of the opportunity to learn, and network. Be a knowledge sponge, ask questions, be inquisitive, add value to the company and to yourself, and have fun!

Customer Support Intern

May - August 2018 • Cedar Rapids, IA

What I liked

I really enjoyed the people I got the opportunity to work with, along with the fact that we were able to foucs on the customer experience. On a day to day basis we could listen to customers, and understand the issues they faced, and learn different ways that we can combat this.

What I wish was different

I wish that our work would have started sooner. It felt that for the first few weeks we were being tested before we got to really work on our actual project.

Advice

Definetly make sure to check out other departments while you are there. Alliant has a variety of different opportunities, and its a good place to learn.
