THE POSITION:Come help the City of Hayward develop and maintain a high-quality traffic signal system that supports the safety of the traveling public. Under general direction from the Transportation Manager, the Traffic Signal Technician performs a variety of tasks involving the maintenance, repair, modification, inspection, and testing of traffic signals, controllers, and street lighting systems. The Traffic Signal Technician may exercise technical and functional supervision over lower-level clerical staff as necessary. Duties include installation, adjustment, testing, inspecting, and maintaining traffic signals, controllers, cabinets and streetlights; conducting regular monthly preventative maintenance inspections and associated repair of traffic signals and streetlight equipment; diagnosing malfunctions and perform necessary repairs, such as pole knockdowns and traffic timing problems, and responding to citizen inquires and log activities on a daily basis.

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of two years of experience in the maintenance, servicing, and troubleshooting of traffic signal systems with a IMSA Level 2 certification or greater.

Essential Duties

What you will do:
Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

• Installs, adjusts, tests, inspects, and maintains traffic signals, controllers, cabinets and streetlights.
• Conducts regular monthly preventive maintenance inspections and associated repair of traffic signals and streetlight equipment.
• Diagnoses malfunctions and performs necessary repairs, such as pole knockdowns and traffic signal timing problems.
• Adjusts detector loops and changes and repairs traffic signal heads.
• Maintains records related to reported malfunctions and repairs to streetlights.
• Responds to citizen inquiries and log activities on a daily basis.
• Provides recommendations for street lighting, traffic signal operational and maintenance improvements.
• Conduct night surveys for streetlights, reports outages, and makes recommendations for improved lighting as needed. Paint traffic signal and streetlight equipment.
• Assists contractor with the installation of new traffic signals. Coordinates work with on-call streetlight and/or signal consultant.
• Re-lamps streetlights and traffic signals.
• Operates testing and measurement equipment.
• Completes emergency repairs during or after normal working hours.
• Assists other staff members with related work as assigned.
• Performs related duties as assigned.

• Perform duties in a safe manner while elevated above traffic in or on appropriate equipment.
• Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
• Operate modern office equipment including computer equipment and specialized software applications programs.
• Identify and take appropriate action when unusual operating problems occur.
• Use tact, initiative, prudence, and independent judgment within general policy and legal guidelines.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.
• Work with minimal supervision.

JOB RELATED AND ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications

You have: Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:Experience: Two (2) years of electrical construction or maintenance experience including repairing traffic signals or electrical systems and/or related equipment. Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade. License: Possession and maintenance of a valid Class C California driver's license. Certification by the International Municipal Signal Association Level I and Level II Traffic Signal Technician is required within eighteen (18) months of appointment date.
