Director of Informatics / Information Technology Asst Director

Position Summary

The Director of Informatics is a leader accountable for improving patient experience and care, driving value, innovation, and growth. The Director of Informatics identifies and champions information systems and technology solutions that improve clinical efficiency, support optimal workflows, and enable clinicians to provide the best possible patient care. Working in close partnership with the Chief Executive Officer, Chief Operating Officer, Chief Medical Officer, the Chief Medical Information Officer, the Office of Health Sciences, along with other MSU Healthcare operational leaders and MSU IT colleagues, the Director of Informatics designs road maps that are aligned with the strategic goals and objectives of MSU Health Care. The candidate must possess a strong understanding of clinical application concepts and capabilities for healthcare delivery systems, the healthcare regulatory framework and the expertise necessary to be an active participant for strategic and tactical technology planning and development. The candidate must demonstrate proven leadership skills, including the ability to strategize, influence stakeholders, coach and develop clinical team members. This position exercises substantial direction, independent judgment, and decision-making authority in applying the responsibilities called for. Responsibilities are to be carried out at a significantly high level of technical expertise, providing advice and counsel, collaborating with executives, stakeholders, and technical and business operations teams to successfully develop, implement, and manage within areas of responsibility.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program; more than eight years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience including at least three of the following: project management, applications design and programming, data center operations, systems programming, database administration, office automation, production analysis, client computing, consulting services, financial management, long range planning and data security; and management; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

Advanced Degree Clinical Informatics Certification Academic ambulatory healthcare experience of comparable size and complexity as MSU Health Care Experience implementing and transitioning to operations, integrated Healthcare IT systems including EHR clinical systems (Athena, Epic, Cerner).

The ideal candidate will possess:

Director-level presence that engenders confidence, enthusiasm, and support in others and who has a strong passion for quality patient care; excellent communication abilities to articulate vision and translate complex issues into comprehensible ideas and concepts; strong interpersonal skills to lead and motivate the organization; demonstrated ability to do rigorous critical assessment of alternative approaches; demonstrated ability to use informatics to support clinical initiatives and drive improvement; strategic creativity and the demonstrated ability to appropriately innovate in this complex setting; team building skills that provide leadership and structure to a group of high-performing technology leaders; ability to engage and foster strong relationships with physicians, nursing, healthcare providers; excellent negotiation and vendor management skills; action oriented and results driven; solid knowledge of healthcare IT strategic planning, technological trends, and systems; and experience implementing integrated Healthcare IT systems and EHRs such as Athena, Epic, Cerner, etc.
