Network Engineer II/ Information Technologist II

Position Summary

The MSU IT Infrastructure Support team consists of experienced networking professionals from various backgrounds. They are tasked with the planning, installation, operation, and maintenance of the critical infrastructure essential to the university's daily functions. Our mission is centered on the stewardship and administration of the university's infrastructure, which includes wired and wireless networks, DDI (DNS, DHCP, and IPAM), switching and routing, and telecommunications. The team is instrumental in maintaining the technological foundation that supports the university's operations. The perspective candidate reports to the Assistant Director and will be required to:

  • Perspective candidates will be required to:
  • Monitor network performance and capacity
  • Ensure system availability and reliability
  • Administrate various devices and services such as routers, switches, Access Points, Authentication Servers, DDI Servers, Wireless Controllers)
  • Maintaining systems software (upgrades including service packs, patches, hot fixes and security configurations)
  • Provide Level-2/3 support and troubleshooting to resolve issues
  • Work within established configuration and change management policies to ensure awareness, approval and success of changes made to the network infrastructure
  • Work with users and other personnel for problem resolution
  • Take part in on-call duty rotation during off/non-business hours
  • Other duties as assigned

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in an information technology area related to the duties to be performed; or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, related subject, or equivalent experience
  • Has worked in networking at a higher education institution
  • Has experience in DDI
  • Has experience in identity-first or identity-based networking
  • Network certifications a plus
  • Strong knowledge of networking protocols like TCP/IP, 802.11, 802.1x, DHCP
  • Some Hands-on experience with monitoring, network diagnostic and network analytics tools
