Veterinarian Technician

Starting Pay: $20.3512 Hourly ($42,330)
After 1st Year: $21.0611 Hourly ($43,807)
After 2nd Year: $21.7710 Hourly ($45,284)
After 3rd Year: $22.4809 Hourly ($46,760)
After 4th Year: $23.1908 Hourly ($48,237)
After 5th Year: $23.9013 Hourly ($49,715)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree in veterinary technology or animal science from an AVMA-approved program -AND- licensed by the State of Michigan as a Veterinarian Technician.

-OR-

Associate degree in veterinary technology or animal science from an AVMA-approved program -AND- two (2) years’ experience as a veterinarian technician -AND- licensed by the State of Michigan as a Veterinarian Technician.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to lift up to fifty (50) lbs.
Must possess a valid Michigan driver’s license and a good driving record.
Must be willing to work weekends, holidays and irregular hours.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Performs veterinary technician services for animals at the Animal Control Shelter and to animals under the care of the Shelter; provides care as directed by the Veterinarian; provides assistance to the Veterinarian; works under the supervision of the Veterinarian; performs related duties as required.

STATEMENT OF TASKS:

  • Assists Veterinarian in the oversight and primary care of animals under the care of the Animal Control Shelter;
  • Monitors animals in the care of the Animal Control Shelter and notifies Veterinarian if change in medical status of an animal occurs requiring attention;
  • May vaccinate or oversee vaccination of dogs, cats, livestock or other animals that are placed with the public, either by adoption or by being returned to their owners;
  • Facilitates ordering and using controlled substances for use at the Animal Control Shelter;
  • Implements instructions for appropriately training Animal Control Staff on utilization and documentation of appropriate controlled substances;
  • Upon consultation with the Veterinarian, may assist in determining the appropriateness of animal cruelty charges and make recommendations to the Prosecutor’s Office during examinations, evaluations and administering appropriate medical treatment;
  • May participate as a witness for animal-related matters;
  • Completes appropriate paperwork and documents medical notes as necessary and required on animals;
  • Assists Veterinarian in the provision of vaccination services for Rabies clinics;
  • Assists in making appropriate determinations as to treatment or euthanasia of animals;
  • Assists in training staff in euthanasia procedures;
  • Adheres to best practices to maintain the safety, health and welfare of the animals.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of modern principles and practices of animal medicine;
  • Knowledge of local, state and federal regulations;
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative in analyzing problems and recommending solutions, and to cope with difficult situations in accordance with established policy and procedure;
  • Ability to remain calm and professional while dealing with individuals in high stress situations;
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing;
  • Ability to prepare reports and update medical files of the animals;
  • Ability to physically perform the assigned duties;
  • Ability to attend work regularly and work under stressful conditions;
  • Ability to work independently, collaboratively and respectfully in a complex, multicultural work environment that values diversity, equity and inclusion.
