Technical Assistant I - Gehring Lab (Relocation Assistance Available!)

OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY
 

Performs bench level experiments and small independent research projects to support scientific research objectives of a lab or group.  Analyzes experimental data, addresses methodological problems in experimental protocols and results, and reports data to supervisor.   Helps maintain lab reagents and equipment. ­Uses discretion in prioritizing and organizing workflow and in optimizing methodologies and results.

 

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES
 

  • In consultation with the Principal Investigator or other project manager, conducts bench level experiments and small independent research projects. 
     
  • Operates lab equipment and prepares and orders necessary supply stocks.  May work with vendors to address equipment, reagent, or supply issues.
     
  • Documents, compiles, and assists in interpreting experimental data.  Reports data to supervisor in oral and written reports.
     
  • May assist Technical Associate with determining the order of research processes that best support essential project goals.
     
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment to complete investigations.
     
  • Prepares, orders, and maintains stocks of necessary reagents, solutions and supplies.
     
  • May consult scientific literature as needed.
     
  • Other tasks as required or assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS
 

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, genetics, plant biology or another field directly related to the work.  Must have 1-2 years of experience in a research laboratory.
     
  • Proficient in basic lab techniques and principles of molecular biology preferred.
     
  • Genetic and molecular experience with Arabidopsis or other plant species a plus.
     
  • Knowledge of various scientific databases and publications preferred.
     
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, strong organizational skills required.
