In this role, you will operate equipment to maintain, repair and fix roadways, highways, freeways and bridges. You will also assist with providing traffic control and incident clean up. A day in the life:

  • Work around heavy traffic conditions including freeways.
  • Set up temporary traffic control signs, devices and flag traffic to protect the traveling public and work crews.
  • Clear vegetation on right of way using chainsaws, hand tools, motorized brush cutters and brush chippers.
  • Dig and clean ditches using hand shovel or by operating motorized equipment including front end loaders, backhoes, graders, vactors, light and/or heavy trucks.
  • Control traffic and clean up the roadway in emergency situations involving incidents and spills which may include hazardous materials.
  • Perform minor building maintenance including janitorial, landscaping, painting and light carpentry.
  • Must be able to move around rough terrain, on uneven slopes and may need to lift up to 60 pounds.
  • Work in and around heavy construction equipment while staying in compliance with safety policies.
  • May need to be available after hours, on weekends and holidays for emergency, on call and weather related purposes.

Minimum qualifications:

One year of experience performing basic highway maintenance work;

OR

Two years of general landscaping, maintenance, mechanical, farming, logging, and/or construction experience or training.

 

Special qualifications:

  • This position requires a maximum45 minute response time to 1502 N. Highway 99W, McMinnville, OR 97128 for emergency call-outs.
  • CDL-A Required: Employee will be required to use a commercial motor vehicle to conduct business. You must possess a current, valid commercial driver's license A (CDL-A) with a tanker endorsement, no air brake restrictions, no 5th wheel restrictions and no manual transmission restrictions, OR have the ability to acquire a class A commercial learner permit within 60 days of hire and a CDL-A with a tanker endorsement and restrictions removed within six months of hire (ODOT will cover training costs) to be considered eligible for this position. A valid driver license and an acceptable driving record are required for this position. We will conduct pre-employment driving records checks, including Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Clearinghouse registration and full query check for our final candidate(s) and annual query for current employees.
  • This position requires the final candidate obtain their Public Pesticide Applicator’s license within 1 year of hire.

  • Demonstrated work history and knowledge of highway maintenance practices.
  • Demonstrated experience identifying problems, evaluating options and implementing effective solutions independently or as a part of a team. 
  • A proven track record of operating and maintaining equipment safely, including the ability to troubleshoot minor mechanical issues.
