Educational/Cultural Programming

This internship involves coordinating, promoting, facilitating, and other aspects of regular educational programming oriented around radical politics.

Are you an undergraduate student looking for an internship that is meaningful, worthwhile, educational, and energizing? Do you want to take and develop your existing skills and learn new ones to advance movements for emancipation and freedom? Do you want to realize your existing capacity to organize and make change? Apply for a summer internship with the Indianapolis Liberation Center and make every day count towards the struggle for justice and liberation. Learn valuable organizing skills by working alongside seasoned organizers and volunteers to help to build community power and movements against police terror, war, racism, bigotry, and more.

We function as our city’s hub connecting the different struggles the oppressed face, like homelessness, wage theft, police brutality, political imprisonment and repression, exploitation on the job, discrimination and racism, attacks on reproductive rights and basic social provisions, the undemocratic nature of our city’s institutions, and more.

Internship projects for any area of study

With a range of allied organizations and community partners, in addition to our growing member-groups like Arte Mexicano en Indiana, Free Shaka Shakur, Hope Packages, and the ANSWER Coalition, we organize regular educational programs (e.g., forums, individual classes, month-long courses), cultural and artistic events (e.g, art exhibitions, film screenings and discussions, and performances), political mutual aid activities, and maintain our website, social media presence, and our online newspaper, the Indianapolis Liberator. On top of these regular activities and events, we are constantly engaged in struggles on numerous fronts.

Summer internships are flexible enough to accommodate any major, minor, or area of study including, but not limited to:

Whatever your disciplinary focus, you’ll gain relevant and valuable knowledge and practical experience by working alongside seasoned organizers and activists who collectively have decades of experience in movements fighting for the rights of oppressed, marginalized, exploited, and dispossessed peoples in Indianapolis, Indiana, the U.S., and globally.

Moreover, you’ll do so in a warm, friendly, dynamic, and truly grassroots environment located off the Red Line on 18th and Meridian. While you’ll work with and meet a range of volunteers and organizers, throughout your internship you’ll work closely with one supervisor. Each intern’s supervisor is determined in a collaborative nature based on the needs, capacities, and desires of our interns, the community, and the Center.

While we are open to all kinds of applicants, historically summer interns have received college credit or fulfilled a graduation requirement through their internship. We will work with you to ensure your “final product” is completed by the end of your time interning with us (which we hope is just the beginning of you working with us and the movement). Qualifications and expectations

Applicants must have a demonstrated commitment to engaging in progressive social change by studying and acting, the desire to work collectively, humility, and optimism. No prior formal experience is required. Applicants of all ages and years are invited to apply.

Summer interns work anywhere between 10 – 40 hours per week for a range of 4 – 10 weeks, depending on the student’s needs and capacities. Our work takes place at the Center and throughout the city, but applicants need only have the ability to commute to and from the Center.

Our summer interns, like everyone who works at or volunteers for the Indianapolis Liberation Center, do so without pay.
