Position Overview
The Division of Division of Mental Health is seeking to hire a Mental Health Tech Trainee at the Chicago-Read Mental Health Center located in Chicago, Illinois. The incumbent will, for a period of from six and not to exceed twelve months, receives training, instruction and performs entry level, routine personal care services and therapeutic activities in the treatment and habilitation of mentally ill patients at Chicago-Read Mental Health Center. Attend formal classes for instruction in routine nursing practices and techniques to gain basic understanding in nature, cause, treatment and habilitation of patients. Ensures compliance with the Illinois Department of Public Health requirements when performing duties. Utilizes American Sign Language and other sign systems in the performance of duties involving direct contact with individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing.  Requires the ability to travel.

Job Responsibilities
For a period of from six and not to exceed twelve months, receives training, instruction and performs entry level, routine personal care services and therapeutic activities in the treatment and habilitation of mentally ill patients at Chicago-Read Mental Health Center.
Receives training in the Interdisciplinary Team process and assists under direct observation, in the implementation of the active treatment/daily activity schedule on the inpatient unit.
Ensures compliance with the Illinois Department of Public Health requirements when performing duties.
Translates functions/procedures utilizing American Sign Language and other sign systems to communicate directly with patients who are deaf and/or hard of hearing and in contacts with the public, advocacy groups, customers, and community organizations.
Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
 

Minimum Qualifications
Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of high school.
Requires the ability to communicate utilizing American Sign language at a novice skill level.
 

Conditions of Employment
Requires ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
Requires the ability to physically restrain patients as necessary to prevent injury to patient or others.  
Requires the ability to work after business hours, weekends, and holidays.
Requires ability to participate in and successfully complete a comprehensive training program.
Requires the ability to utilize office equipment, including personal computers.
Requires the ability to travel.
Requires ability to pass the IDHS background check.
Requires ability to pass a drug screen for drugs prohibited from recreational use under Illinois Law.
