Computer Evidence Specialist I, II, or III
The Onondaga County Center for Forensic Sciences is seeking to fill a full time Computer Evidence Specialist (CES). The level to which the position will be filled will be dependent on the qualifications of the individual hired. The Center for Forensic Sciences is a full-service ANAB accredited forensic laboratory outfitted with state-of-the-art equipment and technology. Onondaga County is located in the heart of the Finger Lakes region in upstate NY. The laboratory is located in city of Syracuse, within a five-hour drive from New York City, Boston, Philadelphia, Toronto and Montreal.

Job Duties:
The work involves responsibility for examinations of computers, media generated by computers, and mobile devices to develop evidence in the specialty area of computer forensic science. Specialists prepare duplicate image backup copies of digital media, recover deleted files, password protected/encrypted files and hidden information, conduct comprehensive searches of digital media for text, data and images and prepare and/or convert recovered files and information into format compatible with needs. Responsibilities also include but are not limited to: preparation and presentations of findings in written reports, serving as an expert witness in court, performing technical review of casework and performing quality control and quality assurance related tasks. A CES III may also assist in training and guidance of less experienced staff. All work is performed in accordance with Federal and State accreditation requirements and departmental procedure manuals and guidelines.
Minimum Qualifications:
****Candidates not meeting the minimum qualifications as listed below will not be considered.****
CES I - Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees within the last ten (10) years with a Bachelor’s Degree or higher in a Computer Science related field which must have included or been supplemented by 80 hours in forensic computer analysis, or; Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with a Baccalaureate Degree or higher in a Computer Science related field which must have included or been supplemented by 80 hours in forensic computer analysis* and employment in a technical position in a Forensic Laboratory for six (6) months within the last five (5) years. (*You must submit a copy of your college transcript indicating the course/hours or a certificate from the training program you attended.)
CES II - Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with a Baccalaureate Degree or higher and two (2) years of paid work experience, or its part-time equivalent, performing the duties similar to a Computer Evidence Specialist.
CES III - Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with a Baccalaureate Degree or higher and five (5) years of paid work experience performing the duties similar to a Computer Evidence Specialist.
Note: Possession of a Master’s degree will be allowed to substitute for one year of the required experience for the CES III position.
Candidates considered for appointment will be required to undergo a State and national criminal history background investigation which will include a fingerprint check to determine suitability for appointment. Failure to meet the standards for the background investigation may result in disqualification.
