Library Custodial Worker 2
General Description
The Madison Public Library is looking to hire a Custodial Worker 2 to perform routine manual and semi-skilled work in the performance of a wide variety of custodial and building cleaning tasks in and around public buildings. Employees perform tasks subject to established methods and routines, and under the general supervision of a lead worker or supervisor. Work is reviewed, for conformation with work standards, primarily through inspection and observation of assigned work areas.
HOURS: Wednesday through Saturday 3:30 pm - 11:30 pm and Sunday noon - 8 pm.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities
- Maintain floors, carpets, and stairways by sweeping, vacuuming, scrubbing, mopping, shampooing, spot-cleaning, buffing, waxing, refinishing, and other specialty cleaning.
- Wash and remove blemishes from windows, light fixtures, blinds, mirrors, and walls. Clean and maintain rooms by dusting, scrubbing, disinfection, and polishing shelves, furniture, fabric, partitions, bathroom fixtures, walls, ceilings and other equipment and/or appliances.
- Collect and remove trash and refuse from wastebaskets, trash boxes, and other refuse/recyclable containers and properly dispose of waste.
- Arrange furniture and set up equipment as specified for events.
- Change light bulbs and florescent tubes.
- Perform tasks such as raking and watering lawns, snow and ice removal (by hand and/or mechanical equipment), trash pickup, sweeping parking lots and sidewalks. Mow lawns. Trim and plant shrubs and trees.
- Perform various special and on-going cleaning and maintenance projects including: spraying for insects, trapping rodents, spot cleaning and shampooing fabric partitions and furniture, spot painting, removing graffiti, and dusting ceilings.
- Replenish materials and supplies, and mix or dilute cleaning solutions as necessary.
- Perform routine assignments in connection with the operation of a low-pressure boiler and other heating systems, air conditioning and water systems, fire alarms, security, and other building equipment.
- Lock and unlock doors.
- Take responsibility for a building facility as required. Perform incidental building maintenance tasks.
- Make minor repairs to building and equipment.
- Provide emergency custodial and maintenance service to neighborhood libraries in absence of maintenance staff.
- Perform assigned work at neighborhood libraries, such as special projects.
- Perform related work as required.
Minimum Qualifications
One (1) year of experience performing custodial or related work. Depending on the number of applications, random selection may be used to determine who will proceed to the interview process.
If an applicant does not possess the experience listed above, HR will review the application materials to determine if the applicant possesses the following equivalent experience:
Two (2) years of experience in applying the following:
- Materials, equipment, supplies, and methods commonly employed in a building cleaning operation
- Cleaning devices and their care and maintenance requirements
Required licenses and/or registration:
Possession of a valid driver's license
Physical Requirements:
- Perform strenuous manual tasks, lift/carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds and perform work while walking/standing for a large percentage of time
- Frequently bend, twist, squat, climb (including ladders) and reach
- Work outdoors in all types of weather
- Mix chemicals for cleaning solutions
- Safely operate maintenance truck (not CDL)
