Communications Intern

Communications Internship, Fall 2023

AsylumWorks is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization established to empower asylum seekers and other forced migrants now residing in Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Northern Virginia to rebuild their lives safely and with dignity. AsylumWorks is seeking a current university student to provide practical assistance to our Development program to enhance communications efforts and programmatic functioning in support of our mission. 

This opportunity is ideal for a driven individual seeking communications, donor relations, and social media experience at a mission-driven nonprofit. 

This opportunity will allow an undergraduate junior or senior to connect meaningfully with AsylumWorks staff and support critical communications for the organization. This internship will be supervised by the Development Officer. 

Responsibilities 

  • Draft social media content and track social media analytics
  • Review and contribute to communications products including printouts, donor emails, and website content
  • Assist with our End-of-Year communications campaign, including preparation and delivery of donor thank-you postcards, calls, and emails
  • Support general donor communications 
  • Contribute to donor and foundation research
  • Research and brainstorm ideas for educational materials to share on the asylum and immigration systems and other pertinent topics central to AsylumWorks’ mission
  • Provide support to special fundraising events.
  • Draft agendas and take notes on strategy and development meetings with program heads.
  • Propose and execute an individual project of the intern’s choice
  • Support special projects as they arise.

Qualifications 

  • College junior or senior with experience or a focus of study in communications; 
  • Demonstrated commitment to AsylumWorks’ mission, vision, and values; 
  • Willingness to provide hands-on administrative support;
  • Strong organization and time management skills; 
  • High level of initiative, resourcefulness, and thoroughness; 
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team; 
  • A demonstrated awareness of cultural humility; 
  • An inherent desire to improve, create and problem-solve; and 
  • Proof of full vaccination against COVID-19, including eligible booster doses.


 

Schedule 

20 hours per week with a hybrid, flexible schedule. In-office presence once a week is required. This position is open immediately with the possibility of extending through the spring semester.


 

Hourly Pay 

This is an unpaid volunteer internship. AsylumWorks recognizes that university is a pivotal time for students to learn their professional goals and develop the skills needed to enter the professional sphere. The intern will have the opportunity to propose an individual project to work on during their internship that can add additional value to their professional portfolio outside of the internship duties.


 

Setting 

AsylumWorks’ office is located in the Dupont Circle neighborhood in Northwest D.C.
