Spend your summer with The Nature Conservancy (TNC) in WA as a Stewardship Intern! You’ll have the opportunity to participate in outdoor research and stewardship activities on TNC owned preserves in the beautiful Pacific NW. Supervised by stewardship staff, the interns will work to help us in care for our lands by doing tasks such as trail maintenance and invasive species management. There may be opportunities for some research and data collection.

This is a 12-week, full-time (40 hours per week) position starting Friday, May 26th, and ending Friday, August 17th, 2023.

Your time will be spent in the field doing work to support the stewardship of TNC-owned preserves.
This may include invasive plant treatment and removal, vegetation mapping and monitoring, helping to lead volunteer work parties, and/or trail maintenance. Flexibility is a must, as exact hours, days in the field, and office days may shift depending on tides, work needs, staff availability, and other project factors.

STEWARDSHIP WORK – 90%
Use GPS, tablets with Esri Collector, brush cutters, and a variety of maintenance tools to carry out invasive species removal and treatment, map and monitor vegetation, monitor photo points and assess preserve conditions, assist and/or lead stewardship work parties, and conduct trail maintenance.

EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE – 10%
Clean field gear on a daily and/or weekly basis as needed.
Organize equipment and supplies to ensure efficient and accurate task completion each day.

Education, Training, and Skills Expected
Plant Identification- some coursework or experience
Data Collection- some experience
Teamwork- some experience
Supervision- experience working with little supervision
Leadership Experience- some experience
Working outdoors with a team- some experience.
Following direction- considerable experience
Interns must be willing to work long hours, in isolated settings, working closely with co-workers. Work is physically demanding and will require working outdoors with considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain. Interns must be able to lift and carry 40 lbs, over short distances and have the physical ability to carry equipment over muddy, uneven terrain.

Compensation amounts:
– $650 – one time RT travel allowance
– $250 – weekly living allowance
– $885- monthly housing allowance (3 months of housing)
– All Weather Uniform Package
– 24-7 Incident Response Support
– AmeriCorps award

This position is an AmeriCorps program and acceptance of AmeriCorps membership is required. The AmeriCorps Education Award received upon successful completion of this position is $1,718.
