(R3677750) Combustion Aerothermal Engineer

The Aero CFD Design Engineer will be a member of the Gas Turbine Engineering organization of GE Gas Power, specifically a member of the Combustion Design module, and will report to the sub-section manager of Advance technology & analysis team. This CFD aero engineer who will join the team will be responsible for, and have ownership of the Aero design & CFD (state of the art steady & unsteady) aspects of, advanced gas turbine combustion technologies, both Micromixers and axial fuel staging for hydrogen and blend of CH4/H2 combustion

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Applying combustion/ gas turbine fundamentals, design & develop gas turbine combustion system with low emissions and wide operation window.
  • Apply combustion CFD (steady & unsteady) knowledge to mesh prototype combustion geometry, run CFD (ANSYS-FLUENT & CASCADE) with appropriate combustion & turbulence models, interpret and present results of the CFD to the team; set design iterations based on the results of the CFD
  • Present CFD results to the different design reviews
  • Employ python or other scripting programming language to speed up routine CFD or daily tasks to develop standard work package
  • Conduct basic combustion aero design calculation, predictive combustion dynamics, emissions, and combustion performance modeling using 1D/3D tools.
  • Demonstrate mindset of ownership and accountability to achieve goals.
  • Support combustion laboratory & engine tests to validate prediction results
  • Perform pre and post combustion laboratory / engine test data analysis to find valuable insights which can be used to draw key conclusions. Suggest and execute ideas to improve the combustion system design.
  • Work effectively within cross-functional – Mechanical, & Aero teams for project execution.
  • Take an active role in the continuous improvement of processes and data analysis techniques.
  • Effectively document and present results in formal and informal reviews
  • Broadening knowledge of own technical discipline to bring in newer CFD methods to the group
  • May have some autonomy to make decisions within a defined framework. Resolves issues in situations that require good technical knowledge and judgment within established procedures.
  • Consults more senior team members for issues outside of defined instructions/parameters

Required Qualifications

  • Masters in Engineering or Science with emphasis on combustion & combustion modeling.
  • Minimum of 3 years of engineering experience

Desired Characteristics.

  • Advanced research in the area combustion modeling practice or Fluid dynamics modeling
  • Application of advanced combustor modeling in prototype combustion device
  • Advanced course work in combustion, fluid dynamics & heat transfer
  • Experience programming languages, specifically Matlab, Python and demonstrated ability to process and work with hi speed data
  • Strong interpersonal and team skills
  • Demonstrated strong technical skills
  • Unigraphics (UG) CAD experience
  • Strong understanding of combustion, emissions and gas turbine technology
  • Demonstrated ability of running Ansys Fluent or other CFD programs
  • Demonstrated ability of meshing complicated geometry
  • Demonstrated ability to use advanced combustion dynamics and CFD models (1D-3D) to understand combustor behavior
  • Strong computer skills in MS Office and UNIX operating system
  • Ability to conceive ideas to solve combustor aerothermal design problems
