Associate Data Analyst Job Summary
Collaborates with the Data & Technology Innovation team to consult with campus researchers, faculty, and staff to design and enact innovative solutions to data analytics questions, participating in projects from initial engagement to results delivery. Responsible for gathering and analyzing data from multiple databases and sources, and for developing and presenting reports and visualizations for a wide variety of audiences.
 
Data Analyst Job Summary
Consult with campus researchers, faculty and staff to design and enact innovative solutions to data analytics questions. Responsible for delivering answers to data analytics problems. Own projects from initial engagement to results delivery. The Data Analyst is also responsible for mentoring student employees and volunteers working on data and technology innovation projects.
 
Associate Data Analyst Duties & Responsibilities
Collect, store, and analyze data
  • Engage with customers to fulfill data requests, understanding data requirements and objectives, and provide data-driven output based on their requests.
  • Identify data sources with input from subject matter experts and compile data sources required to complete request.
  • Write scripts to extract data from data sources and preprocess data by performing data cleansing to identify outliers, missing values, and data fields that need further transformation, to prepare the data for further analysis, with assistance from higher level data analysts and data engineers.
  • Perform data analysis on structured, unstructured, and live streaming data and create analytics reports and visualizations using a variety of reporting tools. 
  • Select, optimize, and integrate data analysis tools and frameworks required to provide data analytics solutions.
  • Collaborate effectively with peers and other teams to implement complex data projects with a focus on collecting, parsing, managing, analyzing and visualizing data to turn information into insights using multiple platforms.
  • Apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills to fulfill requests for information. 
  • Refine and scale data management and analytics procedures, systems, workflows, and best practices.
  • Build prototypes and proof of concepts for possible solutions.
  • Contribute to efforts in creating, refining, managing and enforcing data privacy, security, and data management policies, procedures, conventions and standards.
  • Diagnose problems using problem-solving tools and techniques from multiple angles and probe underlying issues to generate multiple potential solutions.
  • Proactively anticipate and prevent problems.
  • Keep abreast of developments in the data analytics field by completing trainings, attending conferences, and learning new skills as appropriate.
  • Complement and work as an integral part of a larger team.
Project and Task Delivery
  • Complete projects and tasks assigned by supervisor or project leads on time with quality.
  • Assist on project teams and task forces at the team, cross-functional, divisional, and organizational levels.
  • Assist customers in evaluating business process and suggesting potential solutions.
  • Assist with requirement gathering for projects and tasks by working with customer to determine needs.
  • Assist with testing business requirements against actual solutions.
  • Identify opportunities to automate business processes.
Ensure excellent customer service throughout Technology Services
  • Understand the overall processes and procedures of the organization and make recommendations in the continual improvement of those processes and procedures, providing for management analysis and recommendations on continuous improvement.
  • Partner with the Technology Services Help Desk by setting and managing the expectations of customers.
  • Act as an advocate for campus clients in service planning and deployment across the organization; and resolve customer satisfaction issues.
 
Data Analyst Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Implement complex data projects with a focus on collecting, parsing, managing, analyzing and visualizing data to turn information into insights using multiple platforms.
  • Apply analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills to fulfill requests for information.
  • Engage customers for feedback on data solutions and recommend changes based on that feedback.
  • Create and manipulate analytics reports using a variety of reporting sources.
  • Collaborate effectively with other teams and researchers to solve complex problems spanning their respective areas.
  • Refine and scale data management and analytics procedures, systems, workflows, and best practices.
  • Analyze unstructured data.
  • Build prototypes and proof of concepts for the possible solutions.
  • Code, test, and document new or modified data systems to create robust and scalable applications.
  • Contribute to efforts in creating, refining, managing and enforcing data management policies, procedures, conventions and standards.
  • Diagnose problems using formal problem-solving tools and techniques from multiple angles and probe underlying issues to generate multiple potential solutions.
  • Proactively anticipate and prevent problems.
  • Keep abreast of developments in the data analytics field, writing technical reports, conference and journal papers as appropriate, review scientific papers and proposals as appropriate.
  • Participate in writing joint proposals with analytics staff and/or application teams.
  • Complement and work as an integral part of a larger team.
Lead lab students
  • Mentor student volunteers working on data & technology innovation projects.
  • Manage & prioritize project tasks.
  • Train students on correct methods and procedures.
  • Help students create and test prototypes.
  • Organize student collaborations with staff.

Associate Data Analyst Minimum Qualifications
  1. Two years of progressively responsible work experience in an IT-related profession. College coursework which included Information Technology (IT), IT Management, or a closely related discipline may substitute for experience:
  2. 60 semester hours or Associate's degree equals one year; or 90-120 semester hours or
  3. Bachelor's degree equals two years. 
  4. Demonstrated experience, training, and/or coursework cleaning and organizing data (Excel, Reports and Visualizations, SQL, etc.) or closely related field
Data Analyst Minimum Qualifications
  1. Three years of progressively responsible work experience in an IT-related profession. College coursework which included Information Technology (IT), IT Management, or a closely related discipline may substitute for experience:
  2. 60 semester hours or Associate's degree equals one year; or
  3. 90-120 semester hours or Bachelor's degree equals two years. 
  4. Demonstrated experience analyzing data, with a specific focus on drawing large-scale conclusions through unstructured and structured data analysis.
  5. Demonstrated experience in a research or higher education related field.
 
Associate Data Analyst Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or Associate Degree in Information Technology (IT) or data field.
  • Two years of progressively responsible work experience in an Information Technology (IT) related profession.
  • Interest in learning Splunk, AWS, and/or other cloud compute resources/environments.
  • Splunk basic training (free): What is Splunk and Intro to Splunk https://education.splunk.com/single-subject-courses
  • Experience working with Tableau, PowerBI, or other data visualization tools.
 Data Analyst Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree and experience working in data science OR Bachelor’s degree from a data science field such as Computer Science, Information Sciences, or Informatics.
  • Master’s degree from a data science field such as Computer Science, Information Sciences, or Informatics.
  • Experience working with AWS and/or other cloud compute resources/environments.
  • Experience using Splunk.
  • Experience working with Tableau.
  • Data science certifications.
  • Splunk certification.
 
Associate Data Analyst Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Basic data analysis skills. Experience using analytical tools to create visualizations, and ability to troubleshoot common issues with data analysis tools. Ability to cleanse data to prepare the data for further analysis and fulfill requirements. Excellent oral and written communications skills. Ability and desire to work in a collaborative team environment. Demonstrated customer service skills. Ability to participate in cross-functional groups assigned to tasks or project work.

Data Analyst Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Strong knowledge of at least one scripting language, such as R, Python, or Java that can be used to collect and analyze data. Basic statistical foundation (assumptions of bias, t-tests, correlation, regression, etc.). Ability to work with both structured and unstructured data. Basic project management skills and knowledge. Basic data visualizations skills.
 

Appointment Information
This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5031 - Information Technology Technical Associate position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the closing date. Salary is commensurate with experience. The salary range starts at $60,000 for Associate Data Analyst and $68,000 for Data Analyst.
