River Ranger Intern

Major Duties:
Please note that boating/rafting experience is a strong requirement for this position.

The Klamath River Ranger Interns will assists USFS River Ranger and other recreation staff with the following duties:
  • Patrols river corridors and initiates public contacts in the field to enhance the user’s river experience and protect the river resource through the dispersal of information. 
  • Patrols district waterways, trails, and/or roads and ensure that use is in accordance with recreation plans and regulations.
  • Ensures that portals are properly signed and bulletin boards are maintained.
  • Participates with other resource personnel to develop long-range plans for managing recreation resources. Identifies potential problems arising from changing use patterns and new activities and recommends strategies to deal with them. Active role in the development of plans for recreation area maintenance, rehabilitation, reconstruction, and construction projects in accordance with program management objectives and policies. Prepares detailed project work plans and schedules, including required personnel, equipment, and supplies. Administers a recreation area with responsibility for developing and carrying out operations plans for the use, improvement, and maintenance of developed and dispersed recreation sites.
  • Maintains records of visitor use levels, and types and patterns of use. Patrols unit to collect user data, identify or correct unsafe conditions, answer visitor inquiries, prevent vandalism and other anti-social behavior, gather current information on recreation opportunities, and prevent theft of Forest resources and their destruction resulting from carelessness with fire.
  • Maintains the daily record of outfitter guide activities. Checks outfitter guides for compliance with the guide card program. Inspects outfitter operations for plan/policy compliance; takes necessary follow-up action for items of noncompliance; makes recommendations to immediate supervisor relating to wilderness special use permit administration.
  • Performs routine maintenance at dispersed recreation sites including site cleanup and naturalizing. Implements trail and bridge construction and reconstruction projects. Develops and monitors the logistics required for the completion of river projects and non-river projects associated with trail maintenance and reconstruction. This includes condition surveys, developing project plans and cost estimates, and making recommendations for improvements. The implementation may involve the supervision of small crews in such activities. Prepare annual updates of work needed and cost to bring site conditions and operation up to full standard. Naturalizes sites where necessary in order to control the use and prevent resource damage. Determines informational and regulatory signing needs for the unit including arranging for installation and monitors for effectiveness.
  • Conducts education programs addressing bear safety, Leave No Trace camping, river management, angler etiquette, angler conservation, and wilderness philosophy. Develops and conducts river education programs in the local community. Analyzes ways to educate users.

Physical Demands:
The work requires walking and climbing in steep, uneven terrain, exposure to adverse weather and insects, cold water, long days in boats and on foot, performing physical labor, bending, lifting, and carrying up to 50 pounds or more, and dealing with problem visitors.

Conditions of Employment:
Beginning on 1/18/22, all new SCA volunteer program participants are required to be fully vaccinated. Full vaccination is defined as having received a booster shot six months after the Pfizer and Moderna primary series and two months after the Johnson & Johnson primary series.

 
Location Description
The Klamath National Forest includes 1.7 million acres of spectacular scenery including steep mountainous terrain, pristine rivers and remote lakes. The Forest includes portions of 5 wilderness areas: Siskiyou, Marble Mountain, Russian, Trinity Alps and Red Buttes. Position will be based in Happy Camp, CA. The town of Happy Camp is located along the Klamath Wild and Scenic River in Northern California. Happy Camp is a small community of approximately 1,000 people. Several larger communities are located within a couple hours drive. Yreka is the nearest full-service community, which is about 1.5 hours from Happy Camp.

Training Provided
Interns will receive training in defensive driving, first aid, radio use & white water safety. Opportunity to be exposed to variety of projects in the recreation program including trail maintenance, wilderness patrol or developed recreation.

Educational/Recreational Opportunities
If interested, on days off, interns will have opportunities to volunteer with trail crews and horse & mule pack strings.
