PATP: PUBLIC WORKS APPRENTICE

SEATTLE REP is accepting applications for our Professional Arts Training Program (PATP). For more than 35 years, the PATP has helped young professionals break into the world of not-for-profit arts. Applications will be accepted through June 16, 2022 at 4PM PST.

ABOUT THE PATP
Seattle Rep’s Professional Arts Training Program provides apprentices the opportunity to learn alongside professional art and theater-makers. PATP offers hands-on work learning and behind scenes experience. Apprentices undertake responsibilities as members of various departments, contribute ideas, participate in department and staff meetings, and engage in projects with the guidance of their supervisor. They will also participate in professional workshops and seminars, which provide connections with theater staff, guest artists, and the Seattle Arts community members.
 
TERMS
Seattle Rep’s 2022/23 Season runs September 2022 – June 2023. Apprenticeship contract start/end dates will vary by department.  
  • Stage Management: Full-Time (40 hours a week) between 26-31 weeks, with some sabbatical time. Weekly hours will vary based on the needs of each production but a minimum of 32 hours per week can be expected. In addition, a limited amount of overtime will be available during tech weeks.
  • Production Management and Lighting Design: Full-time (40 hours per week) for up to 36 weeks, with some sabbatical time. Weekly hours will vary based on the needs of each production but a minimum of 32 hours per week can be expected. In addition, a limited amount of overtime will be available during tech weeks.
  • Directing/Casting, Directing/Literary: Full-time (40 hours per week) for up to 35 weeks, with some sabbatical time. Weekly hours will vary based on the needs of each production but a minimum of 32 hours per week can be expected. In addition, a limited amount of overtime will be available during tech weeks.
  • Scenic Art (Paints) and Properties: Full-Time (40 hours a week) for 31 weeks.
  • Development: Full-Time (40 hours per week) for up to 35 weeks, with some sabbatical time. 
  • Youth Engagement: Part-Time for up to 39 weeks. 
  • Public Works: Part-Time for up to 37 weeks.
  • Compensation: All Apprenticeships pay $17.27/hour
  • Apprentices should expect to work on-site. Some work from home may be offered. Find Seattle Rep's evolving COVID safety protocols here.
  • In addition to hands-on training in their chosen field, Apprentices have the opportunity to participate in:
  • Cohort activities to build relationships within the Apprentice class.
  • Seminars with industry professionals to gain an overview of how departments collaborate at the regional theater level. These seminars also introduce Apprentices to the Seattle theater scene and help them gain an understanding of how different-sized organizations work.

Since 2016 we have worked to engage community in ambitious works of participatory theater through deep, longitudinal partnerships with non-profit organizations throughout our region. The Public Works team collaborates to host weekly classes, one-day workshops, and events that are responsive to our participants and partner organizations.
 
PROFESSIONAL OPPORTUNITIES
As a member of the Public Works Team, the Apprentice will build community through theater by:
  • Supporting Public Works weekly classes, one-day workshops, and events
  • Supporting teaching artists on curriculum, schedules, recruitment, and logistics
  • Collaborating with Manager & Director to organize and successfully execute events such as Field Trips and Potlucks
  • Assisting with day-to-day function of the team in cross department collaboration organization-wide
  • Join in the ongoing examination of the processes to ensure the team continues to work from stated values
At the end of the apprenticeship, the individual will have:
  • A lived experience of Public Works values-led methodology
  • An understanding of community-engaged theater-making strategies both in and outside of the regional theater
  • Connections within the creative community in Seattle as well as Public Works National
  • Experience in arts administration
  • Helped people feel seen and supported by utilizing art as a medium for building community
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • A strong interest in and/or experience with community-based arts
  • A strong EDI lens, an open heart, and readiness to lead with trauma-informed values
  • A deep desire for our collective success
  • Project management skills
  • Willingness to participate in all aspects of the work alongside the PW Team which can include setting/cleaning up food, strategizing best practices in community, and attending partner events.
  • Ability to function independently within clear parameters when necessary
  • Ability to attend and participate in evening and weekend commitments
