About the Job:

As a Assistant Concrete Engineer, you will provide assistance, coordination, and direction in concrete materials and other materials as assigned. This position will report to and is accountable to the Concrete Engineer.

A Day in the Life:

  • Assists with the improvement of current concreting practices through the evaluation and incorporation of new concrete products and procedures by means of preparing draft quality specification and testing revisions;
  • Reviews contract documents including plans and unique special provisions for concrete related issues and items;
  • Assists with evaluation of submittals, coordination of testing, and maintaining the various QPLs that are the responsibility of the Concrete Group;
  • Reviews lab data for concrete investigations and initiatives;
  • Assists in Process Quality Assurance Reviews of District Testing functions;
  • Assists in review, monitoring, and auditing of QC/QA Programs;
  • Assists in training of the Producer Certified Technicians;
  • Assists in activities of the Failed Materials Committee, including forensic and failed material investigations;
  • Assists District personnel with problems related to the testing of materials and specification interpretation/understanding;
  • Assists with the review of annual Industry plant inspection reports;
  • Communicates, as necessary, with manufacturers, suppliers, and contractors;
  • Acts as a liaison for industry groups;
  • Receives and acts upon various other assignments as directed by the Concrete Engineer.
  • Assists with the preliminary evaluation of all potential new concrete products submitted to the INDOT New Products Committee;
  • Performs related work as required or assigned.

What You'll Need for Success:

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering
  • Must be a Licensed & Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Indiana, or on track to become licensed and registered in Indiana.
  • Basic knowledge of engineering principles, practices, and methods as applied to the testing of highway materials achieved through attainment of an engineering degree and practical experience in the testing of highway materials;
  • Knowledge of and the ability to apply the AASHTO, ASTM, and INDOT Test Methods;
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with the construction methods applicable to concrete construction projects. 
  • Knowledge of INDOT computer programs including program capabilities, limitations, input requirements, and output options;
  • Ability to read, interpret, and analyze civil engineering plans, roadway details, maps, and specifications;
  • Ability to communicate technical information to professionals, and non-technical audiences, both verbally and in writing;
  • Ability to effectively communicate, establish, and maintain a cooperative working relationship with INDOT personnel, FHWA, other outside agencies, and industry representatives;
