Staff Scientist, Instrumentation Specialist

Our microbial forensics laboratory, located in Charlottesville, Virginia, has an exciting opportunity for a Staff Scientist to support laboratory operations.
 
Basic function:
  • Support compliance to ISO-17025 and ISO-9000 requirements
  • Administrator for Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
  • Oversight of proper documentation and review of laboratory procedures
  • Oversight of review and updates to standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Quality assurance monitoring and maintenance for all laboratory equipment including advanced instrumentation for next generation sequencing, real-time PCR, immunoassays, and proteomics
  • Consumables ordering and inventory
  • Completes system qualification and validation processing for newly purchased laboratory equipment
  • Ensures the laboratory environment is properly maintained, including contamination monitoring
  • Scheduling of laboratory space and equipment based on project priority
  • Property audits and inventory
  • Ensures the proper handling and disposal of biohazardous and chemical waste
 
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in Biology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry or related discipline; or a M.S. and a minimum of 3 years relevant experience; or a B.S. plus a minimum of 6 years of relevant experience
  • Technical, wet laboratory experience working in one or more of the following focus areas: Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Genomics/Metagenomics.
  • Demonstrated expertise in NGS library construction and sequencing platforms, including Illumina, PacBio, and/or Oxford Nanopore MinION
  • Ability to effectively communicate and interact with technical staff at all levels in a team-based environment
  • Detail and quality oriented, excellent interpersonal skills, excellent oral and written communication skills, ability to multitask and work independently, and be flexible to adjust priorities
  • Ability to obtain, and maintain, a U.S. Government security clearance
 
Preferred Experience:
  • Experience working in a genomics core facility or similar instrument facility
  • Experience working in an ISO-9000 or ISO-17025 certified laboratory
  • Experience with Laboratory Management Information Systems (LIMS) or electronic laboratory notebooks
  • Biosafety Level 2 or higher experience
  • Advanced technical writing skills
  • Experience working with or maintaining a high performance computing (HPC) cluster environment
