Communications Assistant

Position Description: 
The Communications Assistant is an opportunity to learn and improve your skills by working with the IUSSW team. As a member of the IUSSW team, you perform administrative duties in support of the school’s daily communications operations. Areas of focus may include assisting in drafting and editing basic communications, educational materials, promotional materials, or web content; posting social media posts, press releases, or other digital content; and assisting with special projects. A talented mentor will support you as you develop your skills in an exciting dynamic environment.

Responsibilities
• Under close supervision, performs routine administrative tasks related to communications, such as drafting, editing, or posting basic communications, educational and promotional materials, social media posts, press releases, or other digital content.
• Assists with editing and execution of mailings, interdepartmental communications, external communications, and email communications.
• May monitor relevant social media and news sites and respond to customer inquiries to provide information and explain policies and procedures.
• Manages accuracy of mailing and distribution lists; makes regular updates as there are staffing and/or process changes.
• Monitors progress of communications toward relevant deadlines.

Qualifications/Requirements
  • Student must have work-study award
• Students currently pursuing undergraduate degrees in Journalism, Public Relations, Communications, Media Arts and Science, Marketing, or related areas are encouraged to apply.
• Knowledge or experience in Social Media Communications, writing, editing, and proofreading.
• Basic understanding of any of the following would be helpful: graphics, power point, technical ability
• Familiarity or skills with any of the following would be a plus: Creativity, Intellectual curiosity, Conveying complex information in understandable terms, Salesforce Marketing Cloud
• Able to work independently at times and dedicate a minimum of 20 hours/week.


Skills/Experience Gained in this Role
·    Communicator – the ability to listen, write, and speak effectively. Student will gain skills in communication drafting promotional material, social media content, etc. 
·    Innovator – the ability to design, plan, organize and implement projects and tasks within a specific timeframe. Student will work on projects to increase visibility of School and its programs. .
·    Problem Solver – the ability to manage multiple assignments and tasks, set priorities, and adapt to changing conditions and work assignments. When supervisor is not available, student will utilize resources as needed and seek support when appropriate. 
·    Community Contributor – the ability to demonstrate a sensitivity and awareness to other people and cultures. Student will gain cultural awareness and understanding by working with a diverse group of faculty and staff.
