CEA Program: Community Engaged Associate - OCE Direction of Research and Assessment

Overview of department:
The Office of Community Engagement exists to support, promote, and recognize campus engagement with the community and to develop a strategic approach to community engagement at IUPUI.

Project summary:
The Community-Engaged Associate (CEA) will become part of the OCE evaluation team and will be involved in two evaluations starting fall 2021. The main tasks include collecting, organizing, analyzing, and reporting data, and building capacities. The CEA will also be involved in conversations with partners to build evaluation capacities.

Specific tasks that the community engagement associate will complete: 
Duties of the position typically include the following:

The Community-Engaged Associate (CEA) will become part of the OCE evaluation team and will be involved in two evaluations starting fall 2021. One of the programs to be evaluated is a community-based program with MCCOY and School 46 as community partners. The program addresses absenteeism in elementary school. The other program provides face-to-face tutoring and mentoring to K-12 student. The evaluation seeks to measure program effects on academic achievement, growth, and engagement post-COVID. The CEA's role in collecting, organizing, analyzing, and reporting data will be fundamental for keeping track of both programs and determining progress towards expected outputs and outcomes. The work may imply mobilization to collect data in situ when necessary. The CEA will also be involved in conversations with partners about the programs' progress and results, and the strategies to be implemented to bring benefits to participating students. Additionally, the CEA will participate in organizing, analyzing, and reporting qualitative and quantitative data from surveys, interviews, and focus groups to determine effectiveness and sustainability.

Specific qualifications (knowledge, skills, class standing, etc) we desire the project coordinator to have:
Graduate student Basic to Intermediate evaluation skills Basic to Intermediate quantitative and qualitative research skills Interest in social and educational issues affecting K-12 students

Learning objectives:
By the end of this position assignment, the student will meet the following learning objectives

  1. The CEA is able to name at least one civic issue and articulate how various societal systems and processes address this (and other) civic issues.
  2. The CEA values collaborating with others, especially those individuals representing diverse cultures, races, ages, genders, religions, lifestyles, and viewpoints.
  3. The CEA demonstrates empathy, openness, inclusiveness, and sensitivity when working with diverse others.
  4. The CEA analyzes diverse perspectives and evaluates how these perspectives influence their own norms and biases.
  5. The CEA feels a sense of responsibility and commitment to use the knowledge gained in their higher education experiences to serve others.
