Librarian-generalist, with a teen services focus

The Reference Librarian is a part-time position with a Teen Services focus. The person holding this position, based at our newly constructed (2019) East Forest Park Branch Library, will be responsible for providing reference and resource information and material and programs to the general public for the City of Springfield's Library Department. They will also be responsible for assisting patrons to find and use library materials or provide referral to other sources and for creating and delivering programs for people of all ages, but with an emphasis on teens. Work is performed in accordance with accepted practices and procedures in the field of library sciences related to reference and resource material with considerable latitude for the exercise of independent professional judgment under the general direction of the Branch Manager who reviews work through observation, reports, and conferences. Qualifications include: Thorough knowledge of information provision theory and practice. Specialized knowledge of various groups' reading interests. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills that accommodate a diverse population of users and learners. Enjoyment from working with families, teens, and adults in a learning setting. Creative problem solving skills. Ability to work nights and weekends. Bilingual abilities desirable (English and Spanish, Arabic, Somali, Russian, Vietnamese, or ASL). MLS from an ALA-accredited institution preferred; current enrollees in an MLS-granting program may be considered as well. The salary is $24,935 for 18.5 hours a week.
