Genetics Lab Assistant (Work Study Only)

One of the first human genetics departments in the country, the Department of Medical and Molecular Genetics at IU School of Medicine has a rich history of training geneticists and genetic counselors and providing genetic consultation and counseling services. The department contributes to the understanding of numerous genetic conditions through the integration of basic research in genetic and genomic mechanisms, translational research in disease models, and clinical trials in rare and common genetic diseases.

The lab assistant will ensure lab productivity and success by maintaining a clean lab environment, preparing and stocking supplies and buffers, and promoting safety within the lab. A successful candidate will be self-motivated and able to multitask.
A qualified candidate may also assist in preparing PCR reactions and gel electrophoresis.
Desired start date ASAP

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Autoclaving items (tips, micro-centrifuge tubes, hazardous waste)
- Filling MilliQ carboys when needed
- Preparing buffers/PFA
- Washing Glassware
- Filling Ethanol squirt bottles 
- Stocking tissue culture supplies
- Preparing/disposing of broken glass containers or bio hazardous waste containers when full

Through the work accomplished in this position, students will become acquainted with the following profiles:

Communicator – Students will learn how to be better communicators by building relationships with lab personnel and fellow students. Individuals in this position will improve their active listening skills by interacting with, and assisting lab team members.
Problem Solver –Students will be exposed to evaluating current procedures and lab reagents through the use of tracking and cataloging. Students will learn spreadsheet and data management.
Independent Work – Students will learn to work independently and within a team environment to improve time management and decision making. Students will learn basic lab work skills, safety and ethics.
