Qualifications: LIFE SCIENCES RELATED MAJOR PREFERRED This is an entry level laboratory assistant position designed to assist the laboratory personnel in research. Our laboratory is interested in establishing the mechanisms by which chemotherapeutic drugs cause neuropathy in patients undergoing treatment for cancer. This neuropathy is problematic because it can limit the amount of chemotherapy that a patient can tolerate and because currently there are limited options for treating the pain. To demonstrate how these drugs alter sensory neuron function, we use rodents (mostly rats, some mice) in an animal model of neuropathy. To specifically examine the signaling mechanisms by which the drugs alter neuronal sensitivity, we use in vitro studies. The harvests for these in vitro studies (sacrifice of the animal, collection of tissues, etc.) are time-consuming and thus we need assistance from skillful hands.

Learning Objectives: Important laboratory skills that you will develop in this position are interpersonal communication, knowledge of scientific methods to solve problems, information gathering and organization, and critical thinking.
