Group Exercise Instructor

Position Title: Fitness Instructor
Organization: Division of Student Affairs
Department: Campus Recreation
Hourly Wage: $15.00
Average Hours/Week: 2-4 hours, additional hours scheduled as needed
Supervisor: Fitness Specialist

General Purpose:
The Fitness Instructor is a fitness position with responsibilities in the areas of group exercise and member experience. The role of the Fitness Instructor is to meet the needs of all IUPUI Jaguar Fitness group exercise participants. Specifically, the Fitness Instructor is responsible for maintaining a safe and inclusive environment for members and facilitating group exercise classes for members.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Lead and instruct a variety of cardiovascular, strength, specialty, dance or strength and conditioning based class formats to students and faculty/staff at the IUPUI Recreation Center
  • Assist with Campus Recreation and Group Fitness program special events
  • Continuously work to improve abilities as an instructor to provide exceptional class experiences
  • Regularly communicate with members and fitness specialist about interests, needs and concerns with IUPUI’s Campus Recreation group exercise program
  • Market group exercise classes to participants
  • Provide and maintain a safe and harassment free environment that is inclusive of all participants
  • Have fun!


Preferred Qualifications:
·        Valid certifications are required to teach specialty format classes (Zumba, Turbo Kick, Pilates, Yoga, etc.)
·        Candidates with Group Exercise certifications are strongly preferred
·        Candidates enrolled in Exercise Science undergraduate/graduate program strongly preferred
·        Candidates must display a passion for health and fitness
·        Candidates must display an eagerness to learn and work with others

The IUPUI Student works individually and with others to collect, analyze, evaluate, and synthesize information to implement innovative solutions to challenging local and global problems. Fitness instructors display qualities of a Problem Solver by/through:
·        Provide modifications to members with varying fitness levels
·        Demonstrating critical thinking and conflict resolution skills

Profile 3: Innovator
The IUPUI Student builds on experiences and disciplinary expertise to approach new situations and circumstances in original ways, is willing to take risks with ideas, and pose solutions. Innovators are original in their thoughts and ask others to view a situation or practice in a new way. Innovators are good decision makers, can create a plan to achieve their goals, and can carry out that plan to its completion. Innovators use their knowledge and skills to address complex problems in order to make a difference in the civic life of communities, and to address the world’s most pressing and enduring issues. Fitness Instructors demonstrate qualities of an Innovator by/through:
·        Offer exercise cues and technique help based on past expertise and formal education
·        Grow personally and professionally by experiencing hands-on, industry related, challenges
·        Adapt to new situations that are presented daily
 
Profile 4: Community Contributor
The IUPUI Student is an active and valued contributor on the campus and in communities locally and globally. They are personally responsible, self-aware, civically engaged, and they look outward to understand the needs of the society and their environment. They are socially responsible, ethically oriented, and actively engaged in the work of building strong and inclusive communities, both local and global. Fitness Instructors display qualities of a Community Contributor by/through:
·        Aid in the promotion of health and fitness to members
·        Accept constructive criticism to build professional experience
