Student Research Assistant

POSITION PURPOSE

The Student Research Assistant provides various types of support for research studies as determined by research protocols.

This is a part-time role designed to work 15-20 hours per week to provide general study assistance to the IN-PEACE project within the IU Center for Aging Research. The expected duration of this position will be from March 2021-October 2021. 

The IN-PEACE study will strive to improve the care of community dwelling patients with dementia and their family caregivers through an innovative model of supportive care for people with dementia and caregivers. IN-PEACE will enroll 200 patient-caregiver dyads, and follow for 24 months.

Related expectations include:
  • Awareness of basic concepts, practices, and procedures in:
  • Office and administration procedures
  • Standard office equipment software applications
  • Arranging schedule to maximize efficiency and meet deadlines
  • Data privacy practices and laws
  • Working with the public (customers, patients, co-professionals)
  • Quantitative and qualitative interviews
  • Maintaining files and important documentation
  • Consistently following study protocol
  • Human Subjects Certification required (can be completed upon hire)

Students will gain experience in the following areas: 
  • Communication -- students will coordinate with others to help complete tasks
  • Teamwork -- students will support and work on multiple projects that require support from others in our organization
  • Problem Solving -- students will be encouraged to create out-of-the-box solutions to assist our research teams

Some examples of day-to-day responsibilities could include: 
  • Successfully completes all training for precise delivery of study subject assessments (including but not limited to: neuropsychological battery, mini mental status exam, geriatric depression scale)
  • Reviews paper or electronic medical records to determine eligibility of patient for study.
  • Works with clinic staff to determine optimal time for approaching subjects.
  • Provides education to patient regarding trial participation including information regarding incentives.
  • Documents subject feedback and reports back to study team.
  • Arranges transportation and parking for subjects.
  • Completes electronic entry of study data in a timely and accurate manner and participates in quality audits.
  • Securely maintains study files in an organized manner.
  • Ensures availability of supplies and equipment and initiates purchases as necessary to meet the needs of the study
  • Participates and provides input to study quality improvement and progress meetings to continuously improve study processes, efficiency, security and compliance.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma is required; this role is designed for a university-level student to pursue part-time over the next 6 months
  • One year successful work experience required.
  • Some prior knowledge of medical terminology and/or research experience preferred.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.  

PREFERRED SKILLS and ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Experience in a medical setting.
  • Experience in medical/health-related research.
  • Experience with research and citing literature.
