21st Century Scholar Peer Mentor

Position Title: Peer Mentor
Department/Office: 21st Century Scholars
Pay Rate: $1,000 scholarship each semester they serve as a mentor, $2,000 per academic year.

Overview 
The 21st Century Scholars Success Program is a support program for 21st Century Scholar Recipients who attend IUPUI. The program empowers scholars to articulate and to achieve their personal, educational, and career goals by resources, and support systems that promote academic achievement and timely graduation.

The 21st Peer Mentoring Program assists first-year scholars with their transition to the IUPUI community. The program provides first-year scholars with an individual mentor and workshops that focus on developing strategies for academic and personal success.

Essential Duties/ Responsibilities
  • 40% Facilitate workshops over academic and personal development topics in weekly group sessions.
  • 40% Conduct individual meetings throughout the fall and spring semester. Assist first-year students in their transition into IUPUI. Refer students to on and off-campus resources when appropriate.
  • 15% Support the goals, expectations, and mission of the 21st Century Scholars Success Program. Attend training sessions and biweekly staff meetings. Maintain office hours.
  • 5% Enroll in and successfully complete University College mentor education courses EACH semester of mentoring.

Required Qualifications
  • Have and maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or greater.
  • Possess at least a Sophomore status at IUPUI (24+ Completed Credit Hours)
  • Possess positive communication and teamwork skills.
  • Be creative and have personal initiative.
  • Be willing to interact with a diverse group of people.
  • Must be able to receive financial aid from IUPUI

Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of campus resources and campus processes. 
  • Experience with creative presentation skills and/or public speaking.
  • Ability to understand barriers that first-generation and or low-income students face while in college.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities gained in this role
Communicator- Students will gain knowledge on how to convey their ideas effectively and ethically in oral, written, and visual forms across multiple settings including face-to-face and online.
Community Contributor- Students will gain knowledge about diverse student backgrounds by interacting with the IUPUI campus community.
