Clinical Collection and Social Media Assistant - On-Campus Internship Program

Who we are:
The Komen Tissue Bank (KTB) is the only biobank that collects and stores healthy breast tissue and matched plasma, serum and DNA for scientific use in breast cancer research. We are committed to making a difference by acting as advocates for the thinking, sharing and understanding NORMAL. We are transforming breast cancer research by offering NORMAL, high quality, and richly annotated tissue samples to scientists worldwide. 

Position Summary:
The Clinical Collection and Social Media Assistant Intern will work directly with the Mammogram Coordinator Intern and the Social Media and Communication Intern. They will learn the process for requesting mammograms from hospitals and imaging centers after collection events. They will support the KTB team by performing quality control in de-identifying the mammogram data through the review process. This position will allow the KTB to acquire, properly de-identify, and process mammograms and reports from all donors who have agreed to provide them. This adds value to the breast tissue and blood samples housed in the KTB and allows researchers to access this valuable data. In addition to the mammogram project, you will support the Social Media and Communications Intern with creating social media posts and attending various festivals throughout the year to increase the visibility of the KTB. We also have several administrative projects that include but are not limited to: performing routine clerical, administrative work to support the staff at the KTB, data entry of donor paperwork, pulling consents and HIPAA paperwork to correct any input errors found in the database, making data corrections in Opal. The mission is to assist the KTB with some of the on-going projects and seeing them through to completion. This internship provides the KTB with the working staff to complete important tasks that are unable to be accomplished by the small team of dedicated employees.   

Any students with an interest in breast cancer research, clinical trials, or medicine will greatly benefit from this internship, but all majors are encouraged to apply.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (percentage breakdown):
30% Assisting in the request and collection of mammograms and reports and cataloging them in our database Opal
30% Assisting with the social media strategy and the implementation of the strategy                         
10% Review and correct any data resulting from input errors 
10% Attend scheduled minority recruitment festivals and events, distributing flyers and promotional materials for our events
10% Contact participants in our clinical trial for medical follow up
10% Other duties as assigned

Telephone, computer (including Microsoft office suite), copy and fax machine

Work Environment:
The work is performed primarily in an office setting. The noise level in the work environment is moderate. At times, work will require being at festivals and events and will be off site.

On-Campus Internship Program Summary: This internship is offered as a part of the On-campus Internship Program and aims to connect IUPUI undergraduate freshman, sophomores, and juniors with internships on-campus with faculty and staff in a variety of campus areas/programs. Interns will be required to obtain at least one academic credit in the academic year while participating in their internship experience and will have a site visit from the Office of Student Employment during their experience. Students in this program will be expected to participate in a public showcase of learning at the end of year to outline their experience (such as a poster presentation or e-portfolio) and will be required to participate in additional professional development throughout the year. At the completion of the program, students will be able to indicate their On-Campus Internship experience on their IUPUI Experiential and Applied Learning Record.
