JOB SUMMARY

Under the supervision of a higher classified employee, this position will contribute to many waste reduction efforts throughout the County.

Responsibilities include the operation of Materials Management programs, program and grant reporting, recruiting volunteers, collection of and preparation of home toxics materials. Position requires an interest in hazardous waste management, environmental health and safety, and customer service skills. The position is part of a team that coordinates and operates a variety of programs.

 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Coordinates and operates waste and recycling programs for Washtenaw County residents and organizations, including but not limited to, the Home Toxics Program, County Clean-Up Days, and Washtenaw County School Recycling Program.
  • Accepts, documents, sorts, packages, and arranges for the disposal of household hazardous waste products.
  • Learns and maintains comprehensive knowledge of hazardous waste regulations, environmental health, and safety standards.
  • Responds appropriately to emergency situations during public collection events.
  • Develops and maintains local waste flow data, including surveying, maintaining a database, and preparing reports.
  • Serves as a point of contact for Washtenaw residents, local government agencies, area businesses and organizations, and facilities in the waste management/disposal industry about questions about recycling and waste disposal.
  • Supports the priorities of the Washtenaw County Solid Waste Management Plan/Materials Management Plan.
  • Works with governmental entities, businesses, and non-profits, on projects to meet materials management goals and objectives.
  • Drafts language and reviews public facing materials related to Materials Management.
  • Research and report preparation.
  • Leads efforts and problem solves when challenges arise.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

EMPLOYMENT QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • A strong, demonstrated interest in Washtenaw County's mission and vision.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
  • Using sound, independent judgment within general policy and legal guidelines. Preparing clear, concise, and effective written materials.
  • Excellent organizational skills and program coordination skills.
  • Ability to coordinate and work collection events, many of which occur on Saturdays.
  • Proficiency with technology, including Office 365, printers, and scanners.
  • Research and report preparation.
  • Setting priorities, coordinating multiple projects, and meeting critical deadlines.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with County staff, and a variety of public and private organizations.
  • Ability to obtain Hazwoper certification within 6 months of employment.

 

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS

Obtain HAZWOPER 40-Hour certification and DOT Hazmat certificate required within six (6) months of hire. The County will coordinate and fund the training.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Duties require sufficient mobility to work in a normal office setting and use standard office equipment including a computer, vision to read printed materials and a computer screen and hearing and speech sufficient to communicate in person or over the telephone. Duties additionally require employees to be able to engage in moderate to intense physical labor in an outdoor environment. Employees are expected to be able to lift up to 60 lb. and may be subject to work in fast-paced conditions.

EDUCATION

Possession of bachelor's degree or equivalent in Environmental Science, Engineering, Planning, Public Administration, Public Heath, Community Development, or related field.

 

EXPERIENCE

A minimum of two years experience is required in an environmental role such as solid waste management, recycling coordination, environmental education, resource ecology or related field. Proven ability to communicate and deal effectively with people both individually and in groups.
