Biology Research Intern

May - July 2019 • San Jose, CA

What I liked

I loved learning about disease ecology hands on in the field. I wasn't sure it would be for me, but I was very rewarded for pushing outside my comfort zone. I really loved working hands on with amphibians and learning via trial and error with my mentors. I also met an array of incredible and passionate people at the research station from universities all over the country, and made many friends.

What I wish was different

I had to take one online class during the internship, which kept me very busy. I wish I hadn't had to do that so I could have more time to explore the surrounding area in my time off.

Advice

Stay positve and hungry for improvement! There isn't time to be embarrassed about your mistakes. Learn from them, laugh them off, and keep trying to be little faster, a little more knowledgable, a little kinder tomorrow. Your attitude matters so much on a team that spends long days together crammed into a pickup truck with loads of gear. Think about what you can do to be a person that people would be happy to work a twelve hour day with.

I wish there were other opportunities to grow in the position and continue to potentially make more money or do bigger projects.

Advice

It really taught me a lot about myself and the work that goes into the Campus residence halls as well as how to interact in a professional setting despite my young age.

May 2019 • Boulder, CO

What I liked

I loved the people I worked with, and being able to work for the department of my major and forming better relationships with my professors daily.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have had more to do. Summer jobs often get slow on campus. However, this was very nice for me to complete homework and prepare for study abroad during my down time.

Advice

Forming good relationships with people you work with can make or break your entire experience. Put yourself out there, and work hard!

Transfer Admissions Intern

May 2019 • Boulder, CO

What I liked

I was able to take on a larger role in the CU Office of Admissions. I have been working at the Office of Admissions since my first year at CU Boulder, and since then I have tried to get involved in other opportunities that the University has to offer. With the Internship position, I am able to use more of the marketing tools that I have developed with my time in the Leeds School of Business.

What I wish was different

I wish the pay would have been a little higher, but the experience is more valuable than the money at this point in time. I also wish I would have been able to do more creative marketing. Instead, I do more event planning, communication, and support for the Transfer Admissions Counselors.

Advice

Experience is so important. You may think that you pursue a certain career path, but until you actually get your hands dirty, you may find that the opportunity that you desire is right underneath your nose. I never would have imagined that I would love working in the Office of Admissions, but I have learned so much, and there is something very satisfying about being able to help others get one step closer to achieving their life long dream of obtaining their college diploma.

Enrollment and Records Services Aide

January 2016 • Boulder, CO

What I liked

Working on campus offers a lot of opportunity in terms of flexibility, on the job training, and could lead to a career with higher ed. once I graduate. Working with student data systems, internally collected metrics, and assisting with process improvement proposals have helped inform what I would like to do long term.

What I wish was different

I wish I had taken opportunities presented to me for learning more about campus functions through seminars and conferences, but given my demanding class schedule over the summer I'm proud of what I accomplished.

Advice

I think higher education offers a lot of career options that many other students don't consider when they're nearing completion of their academic program but take a look at what's available on campus and give it a shot.
